New Sunday School Classes @ 10:00 am
February 2, 2011
The Making of the New Testament Canon Class
Small End of Multipurpose Room
Jerry Hudson will begin teaching an eight-week Sunday School class during the 10:00 hour. The subject of the class will be “The Making of the New Testament Canon.” We will look at how, why, and when the canon of the New Testament came to be finalized so that we ended up with 27 books, and just these 27 books. How well do we know the New Testament, clearly the most important book in the history of Western civilization and by far the “bestseller” of all times. We will review the basic facts of what books are in the New Testament, when they were written, by whom and for what purpose, and look more closely at how they were copied and transmitted and when and why that came to be collected together into a canon of Scripture. There is plenty of room for differing opinions as we all share our understandings of the role of sacred Scripture in our text-based religion.
Twelve Keys to an Effective Church Class
Large End of Multipurpose Room
Kennon Callahan’s more than 30 years of working with congregations that are declining, dying, and being reborn has been encapsulated in his several books on the subject. The characteristics that define an effective and growing church can be described in many different ways, but Callahan has built a model for such a church based on twelve key characteristics. These have been captured in his 2nd edition book, Twelve Keys to an Effective Church (2010). This class will apply these keys to First Christian Church by seminar-style lectures and discussions among the attendees. The goal of this class will be to (1) understand Callahan’s model and (2) develop a realistic measurement of the strengths of the Church with which to build a vision of our future. This class is led by Robert McGeary with Keith Watkins lending to the discussion as well.
